Description: This course is for people wanting to work as an engineering technician carrying out tasks such as engineering design and quality control/assurance monitoring.

You will gain compulsory competencies in organising and analysing information, interacting with computing technology and selecting engineering materials. You will also gain a range of elective competencies in areas relevant to your current or intended employment, such as CAD, drafting, quality control/assurance, basic fluid power, basic mechanical design, production scheduling, cost estimating and non-destructive testing.

The course duration will vary depending on the training pathway agreed to between you, your employer and the TAFE College. 
Entry requirements: There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

However, it is recommended that applicants have the Certificate III in Engineering - Technical, or a NSW High School grades in Mathematics and Physics

It is also recommended that applicants be already employed or seeking employment, in the Metals and Engineering industry. 
Learning pathways: When you have completed this course you may be eligible to enrol in other courses in the Metal and Engineering Training Package.

Units you achieve in the course count towards completion of MEM60112 Advanced Diploma of Engineering - Technical.

You may be eligible to apply to enrol in engineering courses at university and gain advanced standing. 
Career opportunities: Engineering Technician, at level C5 under the Metal, Engineering and Associated Industries Award.

• 4GB USB Memory Stick
• Student software licences and text books as advised to approximate value of $400.

Dress code is standard classroom attire with fully enclosed footware. Some classes may require the student to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) of cotton long sleeve shirt and trousers, work boots, and safety glasses.

Volume of Learning:
Your learning commitment (known as the volume of learning) for this qualification is a minimum of 900 hours. This includes approximately 576 hours of face to face training. You will need to allocate the remaining hours to engage in a range of activities to support your learning which may include;
• Independent study
• Work placement or simulated workplace activities
• Research and projects
• Preparation of assessment tasks
• Field/industry visits
• Tutorials
• Learning support

Required student skills:
This is a Diploma level course. Skills required include essay writing and referencing, typing skills, computer literacy, reading and analysing material and resources, problem solving, the ability to be a self- direct learner, advanced communication skills and manage time effectively

If you do apply for a VET Student Loan you will need to have your Tax File Number (TFN) handy. Once you receive your TFN from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) you must contact your college so they can arrange for you to enter it into your VET Student Loan application.
