Description: This qualification reflects the role of instructors who perform a range of activities and functions within the fitness industry. Depending on the specialisation chosen, this qualification provides a pathway to work as an instructor providing exercise instruction for group, aqua or gym programs.

They work independently with some level of autonomy in a controlled environment such as fitness, leisure, aquatic and community centres where risks are managed through pre-existing risk assessment and hazard control processes.

Individuals who specialise in Aqua Exercise Instruction deliver water-based exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. They also have the skills to rescue a client in distress, and an appropriate level of pool deck fitness and endurance.

Individuals who specialise in Group Exercise Instruction deliver exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients with a mix of ages/fitness levels. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. These individuals instruct and demonstrate complete exercise sessions to groups with limited individual interaction.

Individuals who specialise in Gym Instruction provide individually tailored client assessments, provide technique correction as needed, and develop and demonstrate programs. They also provide supervision of a facility or service, keep equipment clean, tidy and well maintained, and handle various customer inquiries.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

About: You require this qualification or a specific number of units from the qualification to enter the CIV in Fitness (Personal Trainer). You will be required to participate in instructional and assessment activities in the on campus fitness centre. You may be required to purchase and wear a specific uniform. You may be required to attend on alternative days depending upon student numbers and group size.

Volume of Learning:
Your learning commitment (known as the volume of learning) for this qualification is a minimum of 489 hours. This includes approximately 324 of face to face training. You will need to allocate the remaining hours to engage in a range of activities to support your learning which may include;
• Independent study
• Work placement or simulated workplace activities
• Research and projects
• Preparation of assessment tasks
• Field/industry visits
• Tutorials
• Learning support

Required student skills:
This is a Certificate III level course. Individuals undertaking this course will be required to undertake one or more of the activities listed above.

This course will involve RPL and skills gap training. Each week the teacher will review the evidence required to meet the requirements of each unit of comptence. Students will then be provided with time to collect and present the evidence as required. This may invovle production, retrieval and submission of workplace documents such as exercise session plans, maintenance schedules, client screening and fitness assessments. You may be required to complete knowledge and or practical assessments.

Recognition:
Recognition is the process by which you can demonstrate you already have the skills or competencies taught in a unit or qualification. It is the recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained through previous studies, work and life in general. Put simply, it means if you can demonstrate you already have the skills and experience you can complete partial or a whole qualification without needing to attend classes.

There are two types of Recognition:
• Credit Transfer, which allows you to receive credit for unit/s of competency previously successfully completed.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is an assessment process of your previous skills, knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the course you are enrolled.
